Why Your Ringtone Sounds Quiet and How to Fix It

Turning the volume up rarely helps, because the limit is usually the speaker or the file, not the slider.

Fix a Quiet Ringtone

If your ringtone is hard to hear, the volume slider is the last place to look. Work through these in order and the problem is almost always in the first three.

1. Check which volume you are actually changing

Android keeps separate levels for ring, media, alarm and notifications. Pressing the volume keys on the home screen usually adjusts ring volume, but pressing them while music is playing adjusts media instead. Open Settings → Sound & vibration and look at the ring slider specifically rather than guessing.

2. Rule out Do Not Disturb and scheduled modes

Bedtime mode, focus modes and driving modes all suppress the ringer, and most of them are on a schedule you set once and forgot. If the phone rings loudly at some times of day and not others, this is the cause.

3. Check the file, not the phone

A quietly recorded MP3 cannot be rescued by the volume slider, because the ceiling is the speaker. If the tone sounds quiet in the browser preview on this site as well as on your phone, the file itself is low. Normalizing it in an audio editor fixes it in one step.

4. Consider the frequency range

This is the one people miss. Phone speakers are physically tiny and are most efficient between roughly one and four kilohertz. A tone whose energy sits below that will measure the same on paper and sound half as loud in your pocket. Bass-heavy tones are the usual culprit. Everything in the loud category is written to sit in the efficient band, which is why those tones cut through when others do not.

5. Clean the speaker grille

Pocket lint packs into the mesh and takes a surprising amount of output with it. A soft dry brush is enough. Do not push anything into the opening.

6. Use rhythm instead of level

A tone with gaps in it is noticed more reliably than a continuous one at the same volume, because each new burst re-triggers your attention while a steady sound fades into the background within a second or two. If you keep missing calls, switching to a tone with a repeating pattern often does more than any volume change.

Still missing calls

Turn on vibration alongside the ringtone, and consider a per-contact tone for the people whose calls you cannot miss. Both settings are covered in the device setup guide.
